The Category Problem Solving Test – Primary Edition (CPST-PE) helps health care professionals and educators in their assessment of a child’s ability to reason, form concepts and problem-solve. It is designed for use with children ages 5 to 8 years old. Each test item consists of four simple, large abstract images and the task is to select one of these images based on a secret rule. Test takers are provided feedback about whether their answer is correct or incorrect for each test item. This format requires children to formulate a strategy and learn from their experience, as well as, adjust and use a different conceptual rule when test stimuli change. The overall mental abilities required to perform successfully on this test make it a useful means to help examiners in assessing “fluid” intelligence and executive functioning capabilities.
